Developing connector solutions resilient to these challenging environments requires understanding of the different types of heavy duty-connector housings, hoods and bases available and the principles of operation governing their deployment.

Heavy Duty Connector Housings

Heavy-duty connector housings are the basic units used to mount all types of contacts and build an assemblage that meets the requirements of the application. Housings can be in several shapes and sizes for a particular requirement and designed to accommodate different ranges of contact sizes.

Housings also come in a variety of materials such as thermoplastics or metal depending on the requirements of the application. The material of the housing must be robust suitable for outdoor environments as well as corrosive or dusty environments. The housing must also be able to withstand the mechanical stresses that occur as the application undergoes normal wear and tear.

Heavy Duty Connector Hoods

Connectors are provided with hoods or covers that should protect the contacts from physical damage, dust, and dirt and prevent shorting. In a typical environment, a superior dust and water seal is provided by attaching a hood to the back of the connector housing.

The hoods are designed to reduce any ingress of foreign objects and safeguard both the internal components of the connector and contacts from the external threats that exist in some of these harsher industrial environments.

Heavy Duty Connector Bases

Heavy duty connectors also comprise of externally mounted frames that are used to support the assembly and act as a clamping device for the contacts.

The connector base typically comprises of a number of components consisting of pin and socket supports, clearance pockets, supports for cable clamping and other accessories, which can be included depending on the application requirements.

External force applied to the pins in the connector may cause them to pull out of the connector if the contact retention is inadequate. Connector bases are designed to be a strong base that cannot be pushed out through the connector body and hence they must be able to withstand the forces applied to them during and after installation.

Working Principle

Heavy-duty connectors use a combination of the housings, hoods, and bases to form an assembly that performs under the exact requirements of the application.

A high-grade sealant is used to match the shape and dimensions of the finish of the pin or socket contacts inside the connector housing. The contacts are then firmly secured within the mating position which is determined by the engagement of the contacts on the pin and socket when plugged into the corresponding connector.

Stainless steel bands or screws are then inserted through the hood to create a robust seal that protects the internal contacts. The elasticity of the bands or screws keeps them firmly in place to ensure a consistent seal when exposed to extreme vibration.

Connector bases are employed to ensure that the assembly is held rigidly. The connector bases must be able to withstand the external forces being applied when the assembly is connected and disconnected from the system.
