Working Principle

16R1100GF resettable fuses primarily consist of two conductive surfaces and a non-conductive material, which is typically polymeric. When current flows through the two conductive surfaces, the heat generated by the current warms the polymeric material, causing its resistivity to increase. As the resistance of the polymeric material increases, the current through the element decreases until the current is low enough for the polymeric material to cool off and reset for the next fault. This automatic switching feature enables the device to react quickly in a fault situation, thus saving the user from device failure.

In most cases, the resistance of the PTC device initially starts at around 10 mΩ and rises to around 50 MΩ above a calibrated current threshold, depending on the type of PTC device.

Although PTC resettable fuses have a wide range of applications, they are not intended for short-circuit protection, as the current through the element must reduce below the thermal cutout threshold in order for the fuses to reset. To prevent damage from short circuits, these devices are usually used in combination with a traditional type fuse or circuit breaker.
