USB, DVI, HDMI Connectors

In the field of electronics, connectors are a critical component for both audio-video and data transmissions. Depending on the application, different types of connectors are used. Examples include USB, DVI, HDMI connectors. Though they are similar in appearance, the features, applications and working principles all vary from one another.

USB

The USB (Universal Serial Bus) interfaces found in most modern devices are necessary to transfer power and data between computers, cameras, MP3 players, phones, and other peripherals. There are three different types of USB connectors, Type A, Type B, and Mini-A/B.

Type A is the most commonly seen USB connector, used to plug USB devices into desktop computers and power artifacts. The Type B connector is mostly used on peripherals, such as printers and scanners, since it is larger and sturdier than Type A.The Mini-A and Mini-B connectors are much smaller than the other two and are used in portable devices, such as phones and mp3 players, due to their size.

For data transmission, the USB follows the 4-wire serial bus topology. Data transmission is accomplished by four conductors, comprising two twisted pair transmission lines. Each connection has +5 volts DC supply lines, data + (D+) and data - (D-). Data is transmitted at a rate of 12 megabits/second. The universal series bus can support up to 127 devices in "daisy chain" configuration.

DVI

The Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is a digital interface used to connect digital video sources, such as computers and television sets, to displays, such as computer monitors, data projectors, and televisions. DVI is the best available connector for transmitting video signals in digital form, offering better quality and fewer artifacts than analog signals.

The DVI connector is capable of transmitting digital data up to 9.9 Gbit/s. Depending on the type of signal, there are three types of DVI connectors available: DVI-A, DVI-D and DVI-I. The DVI-A connector transmits analog video signals, and is typically the only option available to connect older computers or some external media players to newer monitors. DVI-D connectors provide digital-only signals, while DVI-I connectors transmit both analog and digital video signals.

The data transmission protocol of the DVI connector is based on the TMDS (Transition-minimized differential signalling) format. TMDS is a10-bit data format that supports resolutions up to 1080p. This protocol supports multiple monitors; however, additional cabling and splitters are usually required. In addition, DVI supports a variety of video standards, such as RGB, YPbPr, and HDTV formats (480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i).

HDMI

The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is an all-digital audio/video interface used to transmit uncompressed digital data from a source device to a display. HDMI supports maximum data rates of 10.2 Gbit/s and resolutions up to 4K (4096x2160 @ 30 Hz). It is the most versatile and advanced of the three types of connectors.

The HDMI connector is an all-in-one video and audio connection, supporting up to 8 audio channels for high-resolution audio and 3D video. HDMI is capable of transmitting 1080p high-definition data with no data loss, meaning no video or audio artifacts. HDMI also offers audio Return Channel (ARC), an audio-only connection that allows digital audio input from a compatible source device to be transmitted over HDMI cable.

HDMI transmits data using the HEC (HDMI Ethernet Channel) protocol. This protocol uses the 8b/10b encoding scheme to transmit digital data between devices at a rate of 10.2 Gbit/s. The HEC protocol is the default transmission protocol used by HDMI, but additional protocols such as the 3D and HDCP (High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) protocols, are also supported via the HDMI standard.
