Film Capacitors

A film capacitor, also known as a plastic film capacitor, or polyester capacitor, is an electrical part made up of a thin plastic film, metal foil layers, and electrodes. It is usually used as a medium-to-high capacitance, very high insulation resistance, and low self-inductance component in automotive and consumer electronics products.

The 170123J630EB film capacitor is specifically designed for power supplies and clamp circuits. This capacitor offers excellent mains voltage tolerance up to 1400Vac (WA class) as well as an extended temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. Working Principle

The charge on the capacitor drives the electric field between the two plates, creating a localized charge and resulting in an electrostatic field that appears in the form of a voltage on the wires. This voltage is denoted as capacitance, and it is measured in farads and described as C = Q/V, where Q is the charge and V is the voltage.

The capacitor acts as a buffer between the load and the power supply, allowing alternating current (AC) in the capacitor, whereas the load sees direct current (DC), thereby providing a low-pass filter for the AC waveform.

The capacitance of a film capacitor also plays a major role in the surge and inrush current protection. The large value of capacitance helps to reduce the high-frequency currents, which reduces the inrush current and therefore provides better surge protection for the system.
