The terminal block is used to establish a reliable connection between a wire harness and a printed circuit board (PCB). This kind of block uses a closed circuit which allows electricity to transition from the one point of the wire harness, through the block and onto the PCB. Wihtout this block, it would be time-consuming to connect individual wires to the various points of the PCB. The design of the wire to board terminal block is based around several connectors situated in a row. Each connector on the terminal block is designed to fit a specific wire, but usually all wires must be of the same gauge (diameter). This ensures the good contact and electrical connection. It is generally easier to connect the wires to the terminal block before it is mounted on the PCB: the wires are then connected to the PCB’s points just as the terminal block is inserted, saving time.

The distinction between the “primary side” and the “secondary side” helps identify the function of each connector. The primary side accommodate the wires, either for power, signal or data, and the secondary side connects to the PCB. The primary side and the secondary side of the terminal block are usually not connected to one another. The electricity or data must pass from the primary to the secondary side to create the connection.

Spring Clamps provide a secure and quick connection. Screw terminals provide a secure connection over a longer period of time. Push-in terminals provide a secure, convenient, and maintenance free connection.

Terminal blocks of the wire-to-board variety provide a secure, low-resistance connection between two points in a circuit, and enable much faster, higher-quality assembly and future maintenance. This kind of terminal blocks are used primarily in industrial applications where the space available is limited and/or the environment in which the connections must be made is harsh. As such, they must be designed and manufactured with these situations in mind, either having their own protection and insulation to withstanding the vibrations and shocks commonly found in industry.
