170M3063 Application Field and Working Principle

The 170M3063 is a thermo-magnetic circuit breaker manufactured and distributed by L&T Switchgear. This type of breaker is a combination of both thermal and magnetic effects. Unlike a standard breaker, the 170M3063 combines the trip characteristics of both the thermal and magnetic tripping elements to give it higher performance in terms of overload and short-circuit protection.

The thermal element of the breaker activates at a predetermined time delay and the magnetic element activates instantaneously. In case of an overload fault, the thermal element trips initially after a predetermined time delay. However if the current is excessive then the magnetic element is activated and trips the breaker. This dual-element arrangement helps provide improved protection for the circuit.

The 170M3063 is mainly used as an over-current protection device in low voltage distribution systems. It is used to protect the circuit from over voltage or short circuit conditions that might occur due to excessive current. The device can also be used as an automatic switch for low voltage residential or commercial applications.

Working Principle:

The breaker is designed with a heat dissipating element and a fuse link. This combination provides the dual-element protection mentioned above. The heat dissipating element helps reduce the current to a safe level and the fuse link provides an instantaneous trip if the current becomes excessive.

When an overcurrent fault occurs, the heat dissipating element heats up and expands. This expands a diaphragm inside the breaker which pushes against a separate bimetallic element. The increased pressure causes the bimetallic element to deform and the breaker trips.

The second element in the 170M3063 is the fuse link. This contains a section of wire with a high melting point. When an excessive current flows through the wire, it dissipates heat and melts the link. This, in turn, breaks the circuit and trips the breaker.
