170M3810D Application Field and Working Principle

170M3810D is an electrical protection fuse product manufactured by Mersen Electrical Equipment Company of North America. It is a Class J type, short time/dual-element time-delay midget fuse, which is suitable for branch circuit protection and motor protection. Its enclosures are rough-in permits designed to fit into 41/8 * 21/2 inch cutting openings, which is suitable for protecting control circuits, lighting, motor circuits and transformers. It also holds a high interrupting rating and is a UL listed and CSA certified product.

It is also a UL Recognized Component with 600V AC ratings and 10,000A IR. The general grades of the fuse include two versions: RK5 and Littelfuse 170M3810D. The amp rating range of this fuse is 5A to 100A and it comes with a ferrule and copper end caps.

Working Principle

This type of fuse works on the principle of melting of metal used in the element of the fuse. When the current flowing through the fuse reaches the rated value, the internal element of the fuse reaches its melting point and melts. This breaks the circuit and protects the circuit from any further overload or short circuit damage. As the internal element melts, the arc is quenched by the replaceable fusible material in the valve.

The 170M3810D fuse consists of an arc shield that prevents flow after the fuse has been subjected to a high magnitude fault current. The arc shield is composed of an internally mounted element combined with porcelain arc suppressor and a replaceable tube of high dielectric strength, protecting the circuit from further damage. The arc shield is also designed to prevent back-feeding of arcing energy and flame propagation.

Applications

The fuse is primarily used in branch circuit protection, motor protection and transformer protection applications. It is also suitable for protecting control circuits, high-speed automatic machinery, various types of motors and equipment, high capacity heating units, data processing equipment, low voltage lighting systems, and thermocouples.
