Working Principle
A 170M5148 fuse works by providing a very fast response for cutting off the power supply as soon as an an overcurrent is detected. This is accomplished by using an enclosed thermally activated switch in the base of the fuse body. This switch monitors the load current and will disconnect the power as soon as the overload current reaches a certain level.
The thermal element is composed of a very thin strip of thermal sensitive wire that is connected to the fuse element in the centre of the fuse body. This wire is connected to the two screw terminals at either end of the fuse. When the current being drawn by the load exceeds the rated current of the fuse, the thermal wire in the fuse rapidly heats up and expands, triggering the switch at the base to disconnect the power.
If a transient fault occurs, such as a surge or spike, the thermal element in the 170M5148 will act as a safety-net, disconnecting the load from the power before damage can occur. As such, these fuses are perfect for protecting power supplies, machinery, and other vulnerable applications.
