170M5460 is an automotive type fuse used in specialized applications. It has a red housing and is similar in appearance to other small re-settable automotive-style fuses. It is designed to be used in applications where a normal fuse might not suffice due to its vibration or other conditions. It also can be used in automotive circuits, like power distribution circuits, for circuit protection.

170M5460 provides circuit protection in applications where fast clearance of large fault current levels is required. The fuse type can include Standard, Non-standard, Sealed, and Laydown types. The Standard type features a plastic body with connection lugs, an indicator on the body and a replaceable insert. Non-standard, Sealed and Laydown types also feature a replaceable insert.

The 170M5460 fuse working principle is based on the current-carrying characteristics of the element. Its major components include a filament, a fuse element, and an indicator. The filament has low resistance and is connected to the fuse element, which is a conductor. During normal operation, electrical current passes through the filament and fuse element, with the indicator remaining unlit. When the current exceeds the rated amp rating of the fuse, the fuse element melts, thus disrupting the current flow. This action is accompanied by a bright glow from the indicator which passes through the housing window.

In applications with high vibration, like that seen in vehicle power systems, standard fuses may not hold up.
