170M6210 is a fuse designed for Electrical, Specialty Fuses. By using the four elements of current-limiting fuses, – interrupting rating, time-delay characteristics, voltage rating, and size or spring- force for bolting – often referred to as the four S’s, the 170M6210 fuse is able to offer a number of important features. Specifically, it provides enhanced protection to electrical components in both industrial and commercial environments.
The adaptability of the 170M6210 fuse also allows for a range of applications where it can be used safely and effectively. The fuse is generally suited for primary protection of switchgear in industrial, commercial, and other environments. Use of the fuse results in circuit protection that is reliable with lower operational costs, since additional secondary devices are often not required. The overall cost of protection of such circuits is thus reduced.
At its core, the 170M6210 fuse consists of silver and copper ribbon strips enclosed in a ceramic tube or frame. The frame has round pins or strips of metal to which the respective end leads of the circuit must be fitted. The material used in the forming of the ribbon may vary. Generally, “cotton paper” tape, which contains cellulose, is used. When electrical current flows through the circuit, the materials in the fuse strip are instantaneously oxidized. When the current through the fuse reaches a certain level which is known as the “ampere rating” of the fuse, electrons are attached to the metallic substrate, hence producing massive heat energy which further increases the rate of oxidation. This thermal runaway process leads to the “self-destruction” of the fuse and in turn effectively curbs the flow of current throughout the circuit.
The temperature-time response of a given fuse is referred to as “time-current characteristics” and is responsible for the interrupting capabilities of the fuse. As the current flowing through a fuse is increased, the fusing element also heats up and subsequently melts faster. Thus, the melting time of the fusing element serves as an indication of the fuse’s interrupting capability. Moreover, it is also responsible for indicating the overload capabilities of the 170M6210 fuse. Depending on the operating conditions, the fuse can be adjusted for higher melting times while providing good protection against electrical faults.
The 170M6210 fuse also features a dedicated indicating element that shows visible signs of fuse failure. The indication is based on the transformation of the fuse strip material. Heat generated due to the flow of electrical current ultimately causes the rope to lose its physical properties - while this also interrupts the flow of electrical current, a discoloration is noticed in the fuse strip. This depression is then visible as an indication of a short-circuit or other fault. In extreme cases of high ambient temperatures, the discoloration may even be visible even though the fuse has not failed, as a result of an exposed fusing element.
Overall, the 170M6210 is a cost-effective and reliable fuse choice for primary circuit protection. Its reliable performance, combined with high tolerance to electrical faults that can occur even in extreme conditions, make it an ideal choice for protecting electrical components from external over-currents or short-circuits.
