DC-DC converters are widely used in a variety of applications such as electric vehicle charge controllers, household appliances, and communications and industrial control equipment. DC-DC converters come in many different forms including single, dual, and multi-output, isolated and non-isolated, switching voltage regulators, and AC-to-DC converters. Each type of converter has its own benefits, depending on the requirements and purpose of the circuit it is being used for.

The working principle of a DC-DC converter is relatively simple; it uses a transformer to convert the main supply voltage to a lower voltage level, based on the desired output voltage. The transformer steps down the voltage to a level suitable for the circuit, then a separate switching circuit regulates and stabilizes the voltage output. The operation of a DC-DC converter is relatively efficient as most of the power is transferred with the transformer, while the switching circuit only serves to regulate the voltage.
