Terminal blocks – Wire to Board
Terminal blocks, commonly referred to as wire to board (WT block or TB) assemblies, provide a way to connect flexible external wiring to a PCB, or printed circuit board. Due to their ability to stand up to high-voltage environments they are often used in terminal applications but have a variety of electrical wire interconnect offerings. These Blocks also provide insulation between wires and components ensuring no shorts will occur.
The connection at this plug junction is extremely important and must provide a reliable connection to both centralized control systems and field wiring. As a result, terminal blocks are designed to hold wires in place via a clamping action that secures the wire firmly inside a plug. The components that comprise a typical terminal block include an insulation body, contacts, a locking mechanism and terminals. Each component serves an important purpose and is necessary for the block to work properly.
Terminal blocks come in a variety of configurations and utilization types. Depending on the application, there are compact blocks with round contacts, high-temperature blocks, blocks with integrated voltage reduction, up to industrial distribution blocks for complex installations.
Most terminal block applications require two wires: a wire that supplies the current (to power a light bulb for example), and a wire that returns the current to its source. This type of connection is known as a “wired to board” connection or WT block. In this type of setup, one wire is typically connected to a terminal block, either through an electrical connector, or through a screw-on terminal. The other wire is then connected to another terminal block, which is then connected to the PCB, or ground.
The working principle of a terminal block is to ensure an electrically reliable connection between two wires that are part of an electrical network. In order to do this, the terminal blocks are designed in such a manner as to hold the wires securely and provide a good electrical contact. Terminal blocks are typically constructed using a conductor body, which is then covered with an insulation material. The body is then fitted with a contact plate, which are designed to hold the wires in place, and to provide a good electrical contact. A terminal is then placed on either side of the contact plate, which are then connected to the PCB, or ground.
Terminal blocks also have an important role in the safety of an electrical system. By securely clamping the wires to a terminal block, a potential flame or spark hazard is eliminated, and the risk of fire or electrical shock is reduced. Furthermore, in the event of a short circuit, the terminal block will help to limit the amount of current that flows through the system, thus protecting the electronics from damage.
Terminal blocks can be used for a variety of applications ranging from residential lighting to high voltage power systems. The types of connections that are available vary depending on the requirements of the application, with many of the larger terminal blocks offering power ratings of up to 1,200 volts. Some of the most common uses of terminal blocks include the connection of motors, lighting systems, and power systems.
To summarize, Terminal Blocks are the perfect solution in applications requiring electrical connections between wires. They offer a secure, reliable, and cost effective solution to effectively bond two wires together. by providing a secure clamping action to hold the wires in place, they can also provide insulation between wires and components which helps to prevent shorts from occurring. In addition to being able to withstand high voltage environments, Terminal Blocks are also well-suited for a variety of applications ranging from residential lighting to high-voltage power systems.
