D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Backshells, Hoods

D-shaped connectors, also commonly referred to as D-Sub connectors, are a type of electrical connector that comes in various sizes and pin configurations. They are easily recognizable by their distinctive rectangular shape with two rows of male (pin) and female (socket) terminals.

D-Sub backshells, hoods, and other components such as locking latch screws, grommets, and screws are used to attach the connector to a system, as well as provide strain relief and environmental protection for the cable assemblies. In a typical cable assembly, the backshell would be attached to the connector body while the hood would be mounted separately to the cable insulation.

Backshells and hoods come in a variety of materials, sizes and styles, and are typically designed for specific applications. Common backshell materials include brass, aluminum, and stainless steel, while common hood materials include plastic and polycarbonate. Both backshells and hoods are available in straight, right-angle, and elbow configurations.

The working principle of a D-Sub connector is quite simple. The two rows of evenly-spaced contacts on the edge of the connector, known as male pins, make contact with the female sockets on the opposing edge of the connector. When the pins are inserted into the sockets and the locking screws are tightened, an electrical connection is formed.

In addition to providing a reliable electrical connection, D-Sub connectors are also well suited for use in harsh environmental conditions due to their robust design and range of protective hoods and backshells. As such, they are commonly used in a variety of military, aerospace, and industrial applications.
