D-sub connectors, also known as D-shaped connectors or D-shaped terminals are a type of electrical connector which is mainly used on computer and telecommunications devices. The name “D-sub” is an abbreviation of the phrase “D-shaped connectors”; these are the connectors’ shape, which usually consist of two or more metal shields in the shape of a "D".[1]D-sub connectors are primarily used for computer and communications applications, as well as in other professional work. Examples of common applications include networking equipment, audio-visual equipment, automotive, telecommunications, televisions, or other audio/video interfaces. D-sub connectors are available in several sizes and configurations, and are also available in a variety of extra features, such as enclosure mounting and screws, or others that provide extra protection against accidents, shock or wear. The size of a D-sub connector is referred to as “pins or sockets”; the number of pins corresponds to the number of signal paths the device is capable of carrying, such as a 9-pin connector with nine signal paths. The D-sub connector is designed to take up minimal space in order to maximize connection capacity. As such, it usually uses only two types of contact structures, which are a crimping insert or a soldering insert. The former is usually employed for most standard connectors and requires no electrical connection when joining to another component; while the latter is used for harder-to-connect locations and requires soldering or press-fitting.Backshells, electrical hoods, and hoods are designed to provide additional protection and stability for the connector. Backshells provide attention-grabbing colors which match the colors of the connector; hoods and electrical hoods can also be used along with the backshell. The shells come in two main types: fixed shells and adjustable shells. Fixed shells are also available in a variety of sizes, depending on the type of the connector, while adjustable shells can be adjusted to fit the individual’s application. The backshell is designed to not only hold the connector in place, but also to provide protection against environmental conditions, such as dirt and dust. Electrical hoods, on the other hand, are used in environments where more extreme conditions exist, including high levels of electromagnetic interference. These are usually supplied in a closed housing which is usually constructed from metal or plastic. The closed housing helps in shielding the connector and its wires against external interference. In conclusion, the D-sub connectors, together with their associated components such as electrical hoods, backshells, and hoods, offer a convenient and reliable way of maintaining electrical connections between different applications and devices. With their unique environmental protection capabilities and a variety of sizes and configurations, these connectors can be used for any type of application. Despite their small size, D-subs can provide a very reliable connection, and with the advanced protective features, they can be used in a multitude of applications.
