D-subminiature, also known as D-sub, is a family of electrical connectors used extensively in computing and communications systems. It is a type of circular connector that is designed to connect two cables or to connect two conductors together. The connectors are widely used in electronic devices such as PC’s, laptops, tablets, routers, cell phones, modems and robots.
The main features of the D-sub family of connectors include their small form factor, low cost, and reliable contact system. The connectors are often used in high-speed applications, as well as for data and audio/video signals, due to their low impedance. They are also resistant to EMI interference. The connectors are widely available in standard sizes, with 9, 15, 25, 37 and 50-pin variants being the most common.
The most popular type of D-sub connector is the DB-9 and DB-15 series. The main difference between the two is the number of contacts. The DB-9 has nine contacts and the DB-15 has fifteen contacts. Both are constructed from a metal shell with a plastic insulator and die-cast contact pins. The metal shell protects the connector from environmental elements, while the plastic insulator keeps the contacts in place. The die-cast pins provide reliable electrical connections.
The working principle of a D-sub connector is based upon the use of an electrical connection between two pins of a metal shell. This is achieved by a two-step process. First, the pins of the two components are inserted into the metal shell and then contacts are made between the pins. The electrical connection is established by the force exerted by the pins against the interior of the metal shell. Once the pins are fully inserted into the connector, the electrical connection is made.
The contacts of a D-sub connector are divided into three distinct parts. The first part is the contact point that connects two conductors. The contact point is where the electrical current is transferred from one conductor to the other. The second part is the contact nib that helps to ensure that the contact point stays in place during mating and unmating. The third part is the solder tail which helps to hold the conductors in place.
The application field of a D-sub connector is vast. They are used in many different industries such as industries related to computer, audio, video, radio, communications, and automotive. In the computer industry, they are used in computers, laptops, tablets, modems, routers, and other devices. In the automotive industry, they are used in vehicles for lighting, air conditioning, and vehicle diagnostics. In the communication industry, they are used in communication systems such as Wi-Fi, cellular, and satellite systems. In the audio industry, they are used in audio systems, speakers, and microphones. And lastly, they are used in the radio industry in transmitting and receiving antenna systems.
In conclusion, the D-sub connector is a reliable, low-cost and small-form factor type of connector used in a wide variety of applications. It features a contact system that is both reliable and resistant to EMI interference. It is widely available in different sizes and shapes, and is constructed out of a metal shell with plastic insulation and die-cast contact pins. The working principle of the connector is based upon the use of an electrical connection between two pins and the contact points are divided into three distinct parts: the contact point, contact nib, and solder tail. Despite its small size, the D-sub connector is an extremely versatile connector for many applications.
