In this article, we will explore the application fields and working principle of Hard Metric Connectors and the differences between them and Standard connectors.Hard Metric connectors are commonly used in super chipset applications such as GPUs (Graphics Processing Units), ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits), server and high-end workstations, and telecom and high-end embedded systems. They offer unparalleled performance in terms of signal integrity, speed, power current capability, and durability. The connector’s design allows for better thermal resistance, allowing for higher heat sinking and larger solder joint contact area.The hard metric connector was developed in response to the increasingly stringent requirements for today’s high-speed systems. They have the capability of carrying multi-gigahertz signals and provide excellent electrical and mechanical connection. They are designed using advanced technologies such as Straddle Mount, Orthogonal Plane Contact (OPC) and High-density Electrical Interference Shield (HEIS) to reduce adjacent slot crosstalk.In terms of the working principle, hard metric connectors are similar to standard connectors. However, the difference comes in the construction and design. Hard metric connectors are built with a tight tolerance, ensuring secure electrical and mechanical connection. The contacts are typically round pins and receptacle contacts and these pins and receptacles are placed in metallic-plated plastic cages. The cages allow the contacts to be precisely positioned within the connector and resist vibration and shock. Additionally, the receptacle contact is designed to securely mate with adjacent connectors.The differences between hard metric and standard connectors become apparent when looking at the performance.
