Heavy Duty Connectors – Housings, Hoods, Bases
Heavy duty connectors are designed to be used in a variety of applications across many industries including in military and medical device applications. They are also used in electronic, manufacturing and telecommunications sectors. Heavy duty connectors have the same capabilities as conventional connectors but are designed to withstand harsh conditions and can handle much higher current and/or voltage levels.
Heavy duty connectors have three main components: Housings, Hoods and Bases. Each component offers different benefits depending upon the specific application.
Housings
Housings are the outer shell of a heavy duty electrical connector. They are designed to house the electrical contacts and provide a degree of protection from environmental conditions, such as water, dust and vibration. Housings may be designed to allow for mechanical assembly of the connector and/or to provide strain relief of the connected cable(s).
Housings are typically made of plastics and metals to provide strength and durability. Metals provide more robust protection from environmental conditions. Plastics offer lightweight and cost advantages.
Hoods
Hoods are designed to protect the electrical contacts within a connector. They may be snap-on or locked in place using a mechanism such as a latch or screw. Locking mechanisms are typically used for higher-current or voltage applications.
Hoods can be made from metals or plastics, or combinations of both. Metal hoods provide high strength and robust protection from environmental conditions, while plastic hoods offer lower costs and easier installation.
Bases
Bases provide the ground contact within a connector. They effectively help to create an electrical connection between the contacts within the connector and the connected device or structure. Bases can be made of metals or plastics, and like hoods, there are locking mechanisms available for higher-current or voltage applications.
Bases are typically designed to accommodate various mounting methods including direct mount, flange, or panel mount options.
Applications & Working Principle
Heavy Duty Connectors are designed to have a variety of applications. They are typically used in higher-current or voltage applications, and have been designed to withstand harsh environments. Heavy duty connectors are used in a variety of industries, including the military, medical, electronic, manufacturing, and telecommunications sectors.
The general working principle of heavy duty connectors is that they provide an electrical connection between two components which are designed to withstand a higher level of current or voltage than is possible with traditional connectors. Heavy duty connectors consist of three main components: housings, hoods and bases. Each component functions to provide various benefits depending upon the application.
The housings are typically made from metals or plastics and are designed to provide a degree of protection from environmental conditions. The hoods and bases are designed to provide a mechanical locking mechanism and provide an electrical connection between the contacts within the connector and the connected device or structure.
