A TVS – Mixed Technology, in particular the 1840-12-A1, is a versatile device used in a wide range of applications. The 1840-12-A1 is a TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) device, a diode clamping arrangement in which a diode is connected in parallel with the circuit path being protected. The diode\'s polarity is such that it prevents voltage surges and peak transient voltages in excess of a specified value from passing through the circuit, thereby protecting sensitive electronics like microprocessors, logic circuits and memory chips.
The 1840-12-A1 achieves superior transient voltage protection using both Clamping and Absorption techniques. The Clamping label refers to the diode arrangement which creates a voltage ceiling, which cannot be exceeded. The absorption label refers to the capacitor arrangement which uses a capacitor to absorb and dissipate energy created by an energy surge using its inductive loads. The capacitors absorb the energy from the voltage and current peaks before it can reach the protected circuit or component.
The 1840-12-A1 has two input terminals which connect to the circuit to be protected and two output terminals which connect to the ground.The 1840-12-A1 also has an additional two bulk terminal electrodes which are common to both the input and output sides of the device. These four electrodes together form the primary components of the 1840-12-A1.
The 1840-12-A1 uses a connected opto-coupler for Monitoring and controlling the voltage to which the protected circuit is exposed. The opto-coupler contains two LED’s. The first LED receives the input voltage and passes information about the voltage level to the second LED connected to the alternating-current circuit. When a given voltage is reached, the second LED switches on, indicating that the given voltage has been exceeded and subsequently activating the protection.
The 1840-12-A1 has an operating temperature range between -55 and +150 degrees Celsius. This wide operating range of temperatures indicates that the device is suitable for both cold and hot environments. It also has a voltage peak rating of up to 7500 Volts at the 802 megahertz – a very high level of protection from transient voltage events.
