The use of LEDs in dot matrix displays is based on the principle of voltage input. This means that each time the voltage is higher or lower than the threshold values defined by the operating system, it will cause the LEDs to light either brighter or dimmer. The majority of LED dot matrix display modules are controlled by sophisticated digital microcontroller systems, and each of these controllers can be programmed to control the display in numerous ways. For instance, one controller may be able to light up and control the LEDs in a sequential manner, creating the effect of movement. Another controller can be used to integrate animation into the dot matrix design. Other controllers provide the ability to control different aspects of the display such as colour, brightness and intensity, as well as the display speed.
