Signal relays, up to 2 amps, include a wide variety of components, from relatively simple electromechanical devices to complex circuit boards and microprocessors. The most common types of signal relays are solid-state relays, reed relays, and electro-mechanical relays. Although they are all capable of switching small signals, each type has its own application field and working principle.
Solid-State Relays
Solid-state relays (SSRs) are designed to operate at extremely low currents, typically from 1 to 2 amps. They use semiconductor switches instead of mechanical contacters. SSRs have no moving parts, making them compact and good for applications with tight space requirements and harsh environments. They are also typically much faster than other types of relays, while exhibiting low EMI and superior resistance to shock and vibration. These important advantages make SSRs the ideal choice for many applications, such as controlling fans, motors, and other equipment in HVAC systems. SSRs generally operate on AC power, although they can also be used for DC. When supplied with a small control current, they can switch a much larger current without requiring mechanical contacts.
Reed Relays
Reed relays are electromechanical devices that use magnets to operate the switching contacts. They contain an iron-glass reed switch, surrounded by a permanent magnet, which is mounted on a circuit board. When a current is passed through the board, the switch is attracted to the magnet and the contacts open or close, depending on the orientation of the magnet. Reed relays are much more reliable than other types of relays because they are not affected by dust, dirt, or other environmental conditions. They are also extremely fast, making them suitable for high-speed switching applications. While they operate most efficiently at low currents up to 2 amps, they can reliably switch as high as 10mA.
Electro-Mechanical Relays
Electro-mechanical relays are composed of a coil structure surrounding an armature. When the armature is energized with a current, it activates an electromagnet enclosed in the coil, creating a magnetic field. This field attracts a metal contact and closes an electrical circuit. When the current is switched off, the metal contact is released and the circuit opens again. These relays are exceptionally reliable, and can be used to switch a wide variety of signals, from very low voltages up to 2 amps. They are also cost-effective, making them popular for low-budget applications.
Signal relays, up to 2 amps, are an indispensable component in the modern electronics industry. Each type of relay is differently suited for various applications, but all share the same basic working principle. Solid-state relays, reed relays, and electro-mechanical relays all offer important advantages and benefits, making them ideal choices for a multitude of applications. Thanks to their wide range of features, these components can be used to switch a variety of signals, while providing reliable and cost-effective performance.
