Backplane connectors aim to provide secure connections between components on a circuit board. The different connectors have various categories which are classified according to their specific applications. DIN 41612 is one of the commonly used types of backplane connectors. It is frequently employed in industrial control and automotive electronics.
DIN 41612, also known as a Euro-card connector, is a standard 2 row inline connector, which provides power and logic feeding for electronics systems. It is designed with 56 contact rows and a stack height ranging from 6.1mm to 16.8mm. The connector type is a combination of low and high density with power and signal contacts. They are available in three types which are press-in, screw-cage, and solder styles.
The connectors may be employed to carry out different electrical functions. It provides a mating mechanism for parallel board-to-board applications. The type is mainly used in connector systems in industrial electronics and is not suitable for applications which demand high voltages and/or currents. Some applications of DIN 41612 connectors include computer motherboards, factory automation systems, test and measurement systems, and automotive electronics.
The working principle of a DIN 41612 connector is quite simple and yet effective. The plug-in type consists of a body, a contact area, and an insulating body. The plug is inserted into the receptacle which contains the same number of pins, allowing the electrical connection between the two. Once the connection is established, the plug operations by providing the necessary electrical connections between the components.
The connection may either remain permanent or temporary, depending on the application. In permanent connections, the connectors are designed with components that are capable of sustaining frequent mating cycles. For temporary connections, the plug is simply released from the receptacle after the completion of the operation.
DIN 41612 Backplane Connectors are certainly capable of providing highly reliable electrical connections. They are also divided into several categories which make it easier to find the best fit for different types of applications. With the range of possible applications, these connectors are certainly here to stay.
