FFC connectors, or Flat Flexible Cables, are an important part of modern electronic device development. Usually 8 to 40 pins, they are used to connect electronic components and circuits inside of devices such as laptops, personal computers, printers, or other related equipment. It is also sometimes referred to as a ribbon connector.

Typically, FFC cables have a 0.5mm edge pitch and a 1.0mm or 2.0mm stacking height. The contacts on them are pitched at 0.4mm – 0.5mm with a flat material in between. They are also used in small size consumer electronics and are flexible enough to facilitate easy insertion and removal from mounting surfaces, even in tight spots. Furthermore, FFC connectors have legs that are spaced directly across the connector, which makes them easy to segregate.

FPC (Flat Flexible) Connectors are an increasingly popular type of FFC connector. They are usually 2-8 to 60 pins in size and are used to provide electrical connections between two boards or modules. They differ from standard FFC cables in that they have no insulation between contacts and also no insulation between the actual conductors of the cable itself. Additionally, they have a lower profile and are generally more cost effective than their FFC counterparts.

The main purpose of FFC and FPC (Flat Flexible) connectors is to increase the reliability of the electrical connections between two modules within an electronic device. This type of connection is primarily used in the consumer electronics segment, such as laptops, printers, and other portable equipment. Additionally, these connectors are often used in medical, automotive, and other high-reliability applications. This is because they provide a high density connection, good electrical impedance characteristics, and reliable electrical contacts.

The working principle of FFC and FPC (Flat Flexible) connectors involves two sets of contacts, either one male and one female or two males, which are pushed together to make the electrical connection. A connector with one male and one female contact is known as a receptacle, whereas one with two male contacts is known as a plug. The contacts are made of an alloy such as copper or brass and are protected with gold or silver plating. The contacts are usually either flat or round, and the flat ones are the most common. When a connector is mated, the contacts break the oxide barrier on the mating surfaces and make electrical contact. These contacts then provide an electrical path between the two boards or modules.

It is important to note that FFC and FPC (Flat Flexible) connectors are not water or dust proof. Additionally, due to their size and shape, they are not suitable for applications where heavy vibration or movement is present. When choosing the appropriate FFC or FPC connector, it is important to take into account the particular application and environment to ensure that the expected performance is achieved.
