FFC, FPC (Flat Flexible) Connectors - Housings
FFC (Flat Flexible Connectors) and FPC (Flat Flexible Printed Circuits) are types of connectors used for making low-cost, flexible, scalable connections between components on printed circuit boards. FFC and FPC are used in many different applications, such as computers, cell phones, audio/video equipment, and many other consumer electronics products. FFC and FPC are often interchangeable.
A standard FFC/FPC housing is designed to provide reliable contact between a flex cable and a printed circuit board. It is composed of two parts: a flexible connector cable and a minimum of two separate housing components that each contain a terminal interface. It is also often referred to as a zero-insertion force (ZIF) connector, since the housing does not need to be inserted into the printed circuit board for the connection to be made. To ensure optimal compression, each connector consists of interlocking metal pins which slide and mate together when the strap secures the connector onto the printed circuit board.
To connect the FFC/FPC to the PCB, it is held in place with a retention clip, which typically consists of two pieces that slide over the ends of the cable. Additionally, a locking arm may be used for additional security to help prevent the connection from coming undone. The locking arm holds the cable securely in place by applying a small locking force onto it. The locking arm also helps secure the cable when moving or manipulating the FFC/FPC prior to use.
FFC/FPC housings are also available with a variety of features, such as latching mechanisms, socket windows, and additional contact points to improve the connection. The position of the terminals can also be adjusted to accommodate the length of the cable, allowing for the use of different types of cable. FFC/FPC housing designs can also be customized to fit a particular board layout.
FFC/FPC housings are a cost-efficient and lightweight solution for making small, high-speed connections between components on PCBs. Additionally, their small size and light weight make them well suited for use in applications that require frequent connections and disconnections. With their simple yet effective design, FFC/FPC connectors are a reliable and easy-to-use solution for making interconnections.
