Rectangular Connectors - Arrays, Edge Type, Mezzanine (Board to Board)Rectangular connectors are crucial components used in a variety of electronics and electrical systems, including computers, communication equipment, medical systems, and industrial automation machinery. They are manufactured in various shapes and sizes to suit the system’s needs, the most common of which are edge type, array, and mezzanine type (board to board). While each type of rectangular connector has its own set of application field and working principle, they all share the fundamental purpose of connecting two different devices together in a seamless and secure manner. The edge type rectangular connector is designed to allow for the insertion of circuit boards into one side of the connector and then secured by a clamping lever or screw, depending on the design. The face of the connector on the opposite side is typically recessed slightly in order to be flush against the board that will be connected. Edge type rectangular connectors are most commonly found in motherboards and electronic devices such as digital cameras, computers, and medical systems. They generally have two to four contacts and are primarily used as a permanent solution for securely connecting circuit boards or to break into such a board to test or diagnose a circuit.Array type rectangular connectors usually contain two to four columns of various-sized pins that interconnect with corresponding holes in printed circuit boards. The pins of the connector are all equally spaced and fit into the attached circuit board much like a jigsaw puzzle piece. Some popular types of array type rectangular connectors include flat ribbon cable connectors, board-to-board connectors, and dual in-line package (DIP) connectors. The primary advantage of using these connectors is that they provide a solid connection, with pins that maintain good contact even at extreme temperatures and vibration levels.Finally, mezzanine (board-to-board) type rectangular connectors are designed with two conductive boards which interlock with one another. Specifically, the two boards are connected by means of a spring-loaded contact that connects tenons on both boards. The most common application for mezzanine type connectors is in places where plug-in cables could cause high levels of electromagnetic interference or vibrational damage. Examples include data-critical equipment such as audio systems, automated machine tools, and safety systems.Regardless of their application field or type, all rectangular connectors share a common operating principle: the electrical connection between the connectors and their mating devices. When correctly installed, the electrical connection results in the creation of an electrical circuit, allowing for an uninterrupted exchange of signals and power between devices. Additionally, the connection should be secure in order to prevent short circuits, reducing the risk of overloading various components within the system.Though these three types of rectangular connectors are all used for different application fields and have their own working principles, they share the fundamental goal of providing quick and secure connections between two or more electrical devices.
