RF and EM shielding and absorbing materials are designed to protect sensitive electronic components and systems from unintentional transmission of radio waves. A radio frequency (RF) shield is a form of material that is designed to absorb or reflect electromagnetic radiation in order to protect electronic components and systems from potentially damaging effects of electromagnetic interference (EMI). RF and EM shielding and absorbing materials are commonly used in the wireless industry to protect devices from interference and data loss caused by external RF and EM sources. The effectiveness of these materials in shielding and absorbing RF and EM fields depends on the materials used and the configuration of the shield. In order to understand the basics of RF and EM shielding and absorbing materials, it is important to understand the fundamental principles of radio frequency (RF) and electromagnetic energy. RF radiation is a form of invisible energy that can be created by transmitting and receiving electronic devices, such as mobile phones, RF antennas, cellular towers, and more. As the frequency of the RF energy increases, its transmission range and the power of the energy also increases. Electromagnetic radiation also exists in the form of non-visible waves of energy referred to as electromagnetic fields (EMF). These waves can exist in the form of both static fields and changing fields. Static fields are composed of electric fields (E-fields) and magnetic fields (B-fields) that remain constant in strength and direction over time. Changing EMF fields, on the other hand, are composed of changing electrical and magnetic fields generated by the movement of electronic and non-electronic conductors in space. In order to achieve effective RF and EM shielding and absorbing materials, materials used to absorb the EMF must be placed at various points in the system. The materials chosen must have the capacity to absorb the various frequencies of RF radiation (e.g. microwave radiation), the changing EMF fields, or both. Common materials used for absorbing EMFs include sponge, absorbent foam, absorptive textiles, semiconducting materials and sheeting. For RF and EM shielding and absorbing materials to be effective, they must be correctly placed in the system. To do this, a shielding plan is needed. This plan should not only show where materials should be placed in order to achieve maximum effectiveness, but it should also take into account the environment and potential interference that may be experienced. The performance of RF and EM shielding and absorbing materials can be affected by the temperature and humidity of the environment as well as the proximity of other objects and materials. To determine the best shielding and absorbing materials for a particular system, it is important to understand the frequency and type of RF and EM radiation that will be present.In addition to the material used to shield and absorb EMFs, the use of a Faraday cage or fabric shield can also be effective in reducing interference. A Faraday cage is a device composed of conductive materials that blocks outside electric fields and deflects them away from sensitive components. The Faraday cage is usually constructed of aluminum, copper, or stainless steel mesh. Fabric shields, on the other hand, are equipped with conductive fibers that absorb externally applied electromagnetic energy.Aside from shielding and absorbing RF and EM waves, some materials are also designed for dissipating EMF energy. These materials, commonly referred to as RF absorbers, dissipate energy as heat when exposed to RF fields.
