Rotary switches are electrical switching devices containing multiple positions. They are designed as a series of discs with contacts connected to the outside of each disc by small terminals. The terms "positioning switch," "rotating switch," "multiple position switch," and "multiple pole switch" can also be used to describe a rotary switch. These switches are often used in audio and visual engineering applications, as well as a number of other field-related uses.
212-3 Application Fields
Rotary switches are used in a variety of industrial and general purpose applications. Some common applications fields include aviation, telecommunication, electrical systems, and robotics. These switches are also the preferred switching devices for medical devices, audio and video components, and other electronic devices. In the industrial automation field, rotary switches are frequently used in industrial machinery and equipment.
212-3 Working Principle
Rotary switches utilize two basic components to conduct electrical signals. The first component is the contact mechanism which is driven by a rotating cam, called the rotor. When the rotor is turned, it causes the contact mechanism to move, opening or closing some of the contacts on the disc. The other component is the stationary contact, which is in contact with the contacts on the discs of the rotor. This contact completes the circuit to be used with power or signal.
Rotary switches usually use three or four different types of contact technologies:
- Metal to metal contacts
- Ceramic contacts
- Fiber contacts
- Glass-to-metal contacts
The type of contact technology used largely depends on the application or conditions that the switch is to be used in. Ceramic contacts are the most reliable in areas of extreme heat and humidity, whereas fiber contacts are more suitable for higher temperatures. Metal-to-metal contacts are ideal for high-speed operations, but glass-to-metal contacts are more commonly used in medical applications.
Rotary switches are a versatile, reliable and cost-effective means of connecting and controlling a variety of applications. With the ability to adjust the speed of the rotor, from 0.5 second to 60 minutes, rotary switches are suited for a range of applications. This makes them an ideal choice for a range of applications in a variety of industries.
