FFC, FPC (Flat Flexible) Connectors
Flat flexible cables (FFC) and flat flexible printed circuits (FPC) are two types of connectors which are commonly used today in a variety of applications. Both FFC and FPC are designed to allow for data transmission in environments where space is an issue and where a maximum of flexibility is needed.
Applications
FFC and FPC connectors are widely used in many industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, medical, aerospace, military, industrial and computer/office equipment.
Some of the applications include:
- Computer and office equipment such as printers, scanners, keyboards and mice.
- Consumer electronics including mobile phones, digital cameras, consumer medical devices, gaming systems and electronic toys.
- Automotive applications such as airbags, audio systems, climate controls, navigation systems and LCD displays.
- Industrial robotics, factory automation and process control.
- Aerospace and defense applications.
Working Principle
FFC and FPC connectors rely on an ingenious design that allows them to be used in places where space is at a premium. The cables are made of small copper conductors which are surrounded by shielding material and a flexible insulating material. This allows the cables to be bent and twisted in a way that conventional cable connectors cannot. The connectors are soldered on one end of the cable and the other end is held in place by a friction fit. This allows the cable to be easily plugged into a mating connector and securely held in place. The connectors come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit most applications.
FFC and FPC connectors are increasingly becoming the connector of choice for many applications because of their small size, ease of use and reliable performance. They are highly reliable and offer excellent performance in harsh environments. They are cost efficient and offer a high level of flexibility, allowing them to be used in a wide range of applications.
