FFC and FPC (Flat Flexible) Connectors, also known as Flat Flex connectors, have become commonplace in a wide variety of applications, from consumer electronics to automotive applications. FFC connectors are used in the assembly of devices, panels, and assemblies. FFC/FPC connectors come in a variety of sizes, configurations, and technologies to meet the needs of virtually any application.

A FFC/FPC connector generally has two components - a flexible circuit strip containing contacts, and a mating connector. The flexible circuit strip contains pins, blades or contacts on one side, with the other side secured to a housing. The mating connector contains sockets, slots, or pins which mate with the contacts on the flexible circuit strip. This joint between the flexible circuit strip and the mating connector is known as a solderless or "non-solder" connection. The connector housings act to secure and protect the joint.

The FFC standard is suitable for most applications where a data signal needs to be transferred. It is particularly useful in applications such as compact laptops or digital cameras, where space is limited. Because of its flat profile, the connector can fit into tight spaces, such as slimmer LCD monitors or compartments. It is also useful for applications that require the connection to move or flex, such as motion detectors.

The FFC/FPC family of connectors includes 4-pin, 6-pin, 8-pin, and 10-pin (and higher) configurations. These connectors can be used with a variety of surfaces, such as rigid boards, flat panels, and flexible applications. Both straight and right-angle configurations are available. Cables used with FFC/FPC connectors are usually ribbon type and are available in varying cable lengths, jacket types, and conductor diameters.

FFC/FPC connectors are designed to interconnect flat flex circuit boards to the desired circuit. This connection is made through conductive springs, as opposed to traditional, bulky wires and pins. The strength and reliability of the interconnection is largely dependent on the precision of the spring components and their surface finish. The springs have to be of the exact length and strength to ensure proper contacts and secure connection.

The electrical principals of FFC/FPC connectors work the same as any other type of connector; the springs make contact with the respective sides the contacts come in contact with. Depending on the application, contact forces can range from 0.5 ounces to 2 ounces, with dielectric strength and current rating from 100mA to 6A.

FFC/FPC connectors offer a number of advantages over traditional wire to board, wire to wire and PCB connectors. They are space efficient, durable, and require no soldering. This eliminates the possibility of errors due to improper soldering, while providing secure, consistent electrical connections. FFC/FPC connectors are also less expensive than other connector types and easier to install since they are designed to fit into tight spaces. The connectors also provide flexibility in design by allowing multiple circuits and data paths on the same circuit board.

FFC/FPC connectors are used in a wide variety of industries and applications, from industrial machinery to consumer electronics. Common applications include: disk drives, LCD displays, cameras, DVD players, audio systems, cell phone chargers, computer mother boards, and medical equipment. FFC/FPC connectors are an excellent choice for applications requiring the highest levels of performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
