Coaxial Connectors (RF) - Adapters are used in a variety of applications ranging from military communication systems, broadcast systems, industrial, medical and more. These connectors consist of two components, an outer shell that is threaded onto the end of the cable, and the inner shell which is secured to the center conductor. This allows for both electrical and mechanical performance of the connector in a variety of different environments.

The two components in Coaxial Connectors (RF) - Adapters are primarily designed to provide strong electrical connections capable of carrying high-frequency, high-power signals. To provide the required performance, the connectors employ a center conductor that is surrounded by a dielectric material. The dielectric material, usually a dielectric-coated wire, acts as an insulator, allowing the inner conductor to carry a signal without interference. The center conductor is then surrounded by a dielectric material which forms a double-shielded system.

The dielectric material acts as an impediment to electromagnetic interference and in effect, acts as a Faraday cage. The Faraday cage eliminates the risk of electromagnetic interference crossing between two tight connections. The dielectric system further enhances the performance of the Coaxial Connectors (RF) - Adapters by reducing return loss in the system. Return loss occurs when signals traveling through a transmission line start to reflect back onto the line. The dielectric surround the inner conductor helps reduce this type of interference.

The outer shell of the Coaxial Connectors (RF) - Adapters is usually made from metal and will either be crimped or soldered to the cable. Depending on the application, the metal may also be machined to provide specific tolerances for a secure fit. The outer shell provides an additional electrical connection along with the center conductor, thus increasing the performance of the connection.

The inner shell of the Coaxial Connectors (RF) - Adapters is designed to contain the center conductor and provide a strong mechanical link to the cable. These shells are often secured to the cable using screws, set screws, or a threaded locking-ring. In most cases, the inner shell will also contain a removable rubber grommet, which helps to protect the interface from dust and moisture optimization.
