Mechanical thermostats are the simplest type and can be classified into two primary categories: open-system and closed-system mechanical thermostats.
Open-system mechanical thermostats are designed to detect changes in temperature within a given environment. This type of thermostat consists of a metallic probe or bulb that is placed inside the environment where the temperature is being monitored. The bulb is isolated from the environment by a sealed housing, which is designed to contain the temperature around the bulb. The temperature surrounding the probe is then compared to the desired temperature setting on the thermostat, which is adjusted using a dial or switch. When the desired temperature is reached, the thermostat will open or close an electrical circuit in order to control the temperature of the environment. Examples of closed-system mechanical thermostats include hot water heaters, and boilers.
