LED Lighting - COBs, Engines, Modules

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are solid-state semiconductors that produce visible light when an electric current passes through them. More efficient than traditional lighting, LEDs can produce more light with much less energy, which makes them ideal for applications where energy, heat and size are an issue. Fortunately, the range of applications possible with LEDs is vast and increasing rapidly. Hence, there is a growing range of lighting products, from COBs (chip on board) to modules and engines.

COBs are some of the latest products in LED lighting technology. This type of product is actually an array of many individual LED chips, all bonded directly on to a single substrate material for easy mounting. By having multiple chips on one substrate, design engineers can select the right size, colour and power level, which mean the light can be used anywhere in the house or office. This kind of product is ideal for backlighting, under cabinet lighting, display cases, exterior lighting and many other applications.

Engine modules are another popular type of LED lighting product. These are designed to fit into a fixture module and provide a consistent output of light. A typical engine module contains a number of LEDs, a wiring harness and an integrated circuit to ensure the right current flows through the LEDs to produce the desired light output. These modules are perfect for replacement bulbs, task lighting, cove lighting, retrofits and other applications.

LED modules are also becoming a popular choice for lighting applications. These modules are small electronic components that typically span a wide range of applications from signage to wall-washing to aquariums. LED modules are comprised of several LEDs (LED centric) or an array of multiple LEDs on a chip(COB technology). Compared to traditional lighting, LED modules are extremely cost-effective and easy to install.

All of these technologies, from COBs to modules and engines, have a wide range of applications. With the ever-evolving technology, there are numerous options available to choose from. As long as design engineers and users understand the principles behind each of these technologies, and choose the best product for the job, they should be able to make the right choice for their application needs.
