Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) are two of the most common electromagnetic disturbances found in industrial, commercial, and residential environments. RFI is caused by signals from one electronic device interfering with another, while EMI is caused by electromagnetic radiation, generated from normal operation of electrical and electronic devices. Shielding and absorbing materials are the the most effective methods for blocking either EMI or RFI. However, RFI and EMI shielding and absorbing materials are being used together with increasing frequency as the prevalence of both types of interference increases.
RFI Shielding materials are used to protect sensitive electronic equipment from RFI by reflecting, absorbing, or dissipating the RFI signal, for example, shielding metalic tape can be applied to a wall to absorb RFI, while metal shielding enclosures can be built around sensitive electrical and electronic equipment to protect it from RFI.
EMI Shielding materials are used to reflect, absorb, or dissipate EMI radiation generated by electrical and electronic devices, preventing it from affecting other nearby electronic devices. EMI shielding materials are usually made from non-metallic materials like plastics, and can also be cables or other types of insulators. Such materials are usually used to enclose sensitive equipment in buildings or other close-knit spaces.
Absorbing materials are different from EMI and RFI shielding materials in that they absorb and dissipate energy waves rather than reflecting them. Absorbing materials are usually made from porous materials, such as foams and sponges, and are especially useful in a variety of scenarios where direct reflection of the EMI or RFI signal is undesirable or impossible.
RFI and EMI shielding and absorbing materials can be used in a variety of applications, ranging from protecting sensitive electronic and electrical equipment, to preventing interference between different electronic devices. These materials can also be used to prevent EMI and RFI from entering or leaving a building or other enclosed area, such as a factory. They can also be used in an aircraft to prevent EMI or RFI from entering or leaving the aircraft, which can be dangerous if not prevented.
RFI and EMI shielding and absorbing materials are becoming increasingly important in the context of an increasingly interconnected world, where devices are exchanging data with one another at ever-increasing speeds and data volumes. By effectively blocking both EMI and RFI, these materials provide the necessary protection to ensure the smooth operation of increasingly complex electronic systems.
To conclude, RFI and EMI shielding and absorbing materials have become an essential part of minimising interference and disruption caused by RFI and EMI. With their increasingly widespread uses from simple electronics shielding to complex EMI and RFI applications, these materials are now considered an essential part of a properly designed and implemented system.
