EMI (electromagnetic interference) and RFI (radio frequency interference) protective shielding materials are used to protect electronic circuits and systems by providing shielding against the external electrical noises and electromagnetic fields. EM shielding materials are usually composed of metal, such as copper, aluminum, or stainless steel, but some plastics may also be used. EM shielding materials can be divided into two categories: absorbing materials and reflective materials.
Absorbing materials, also known as “attenuating” materials, are designed to absorb the energy of the EM radiation, effectively reducing the amount of energy incident upon the circuit or system. Absorbing materials usually consist of ferrite materials, such as ferrite layers and ferrite cores, or dielectric materials. The ferrite layers are usually a composite of ferrite powder which is mixed with a dielectric material, such as rubber, epoxy, or silicone. These layers are typically applied to the surface of the shielded components and can also be placed between the conducting wires of the system. The ferrite cores are made of a ferrite rod which is wound around a coil to produce an inductive effect. The dielectric materials used in absorptive shielding materials are usually non-conductive and insulating materials, such as ceramics or polymers. These materials are used to fill any gaps between the plate and the conductor, thus preventing any direct contact between the plate and the conductor and reducing the effectiveness of the shield.
Reflective materials, also known as “reflective shielding” materials, are designed to reflect the EM radiation away from the circuit or system. These materials are usually made of metal, such as copper, aluminum, or stainless steel, and may also be coated with a dielectric material. Reflective materials are usually placed either in a closed cavity or on the surface of the shielded components, and the EM radiation is reflected away from the components. Reflective shielding materials can also be used to reduce the strength of the EM radiation passing through the components, thus reducing the amount of EM radiation reaching the components.
EM shielding materials are used in a variety of applications, such as computers, mobile phones, and medical devices. In addition, they are often used in military and industrial applications, such as radar, high-frequency welding, and high-voltage power transmission. EM shielding materials can be used to reduce the amount of EMI and RFI incident on the components of a circuit or system, thus reducing the amount of noise and interference caused by the EM radiation.
The working principle of EMI and RFI shielding materials is based on the fact that when the EM radiation incident on an object, a portion of the energy is reflected back to the source, while the rest is absorbed and dissipated by the material. The EM radiation that is reflected is usually at a lower frequency than the incident radiation, thus reducing the amount of noise and interference caused by the EM radiation. The absorbed energy is then dissipated by heat and is not re-emitted back into the environment.
In conclusion, EM shielding materials are used to protect electronic circuits and systems from the external electrical noises and electromagnetic fields. They can be divided into two categories: absorbing materials and reflective materials. Absorbing materials are usually made of ferrite layers and cores, or dielectric materials, while reflective materials are usually made of metals or dielectrics. EMI and RFI protective shielding materials work by reducing the amount of incident EM radiation, thus reducing the amount of interference.
