304-11-114-41-770000 Application Field and Working Principle

Rectangular connectors are available in two distinct categories. The first is “header” or “receptacle” and the second is “female socket.”

Header or Receptacle

A header or receptacle, which is also known as a pin header, is a type of electrical connector that typically has two to forty pins. A header is made up of two parts: a stem and a pin. The stem is typically made from plastic, and the pin is made from metal the same as the metal piece used in female sockets. A header is usually square or rectangular in shape with a few side ports. In contrast to female sockets, a header is a male connector, meaning that it is the connector that provides the electrical signal to the female socket. A header or receptacle is typically used in applications which do not need external insulation, such as in printed circuit boards (PCBs) and cable assemblies. They are also used in low-voltage, low-current, and signal applications.

Female Socket

A female socket, also known as a socket header, is a type of electrical connector that typically has between one to twenty pins. Unlike a header, a female socket has a metal insert, typically made from copper, which is soldered onto a PCB. The metal insert is the same type used in a header or receptacle.Female sockets are typically used in applications which need external insulation, such as in components and appliances. They are also used in high-voltage, high-current, and power applications.

Working Principle

The working principle of a header or receptacle and a female socket relies on the same basic idea that two pieces with complimentary shape fasten together. In both a header and a female socket, the male connector (the header) has one or more pins which connect to the female socket’s metal insert to form a mechanical and electrical connection. The metal inserts used in both connectors act as an insulation barrier, and the force of the two pieces being held together helps to ensure that the connection does not become loose or fail due to vibration or movement. The two connectors can be disconnected from each other by either pulling them apart or by pressing the release button on the female socket. In summary, rectangular connectors, which include headers, receptacles, and female sockets, have many uses. Headers and receptacles are used in low voltage applications and for signal transmission while female sockets are used in high voltage applications and power transmission. The connection between the two is made possible by the complimentary shape of the header’s pins and the female socket’s metal insert.
