The working principle of a header or receptacle and a female socket relies on the same basic idea that two pieces with complimentary shape fasten together. In both a header and a female socket, the male connector (the header) has one or more pins which connect to the female socket’s metal insert to form a mechanical and electrical connection. The metal inserts used in both connectors act as an insulation barrier, and the force of the two pieces being held together helps to ensure that the connection does not become loose or fail due to vibration or movement.
