Terminal blocks are essential components in any electrical system. They provide a safe and secure connection between two electrical points. A terminal block is a type of electrical connection where a plug, wire or other conductor is connected to a terminal. A terminal block is used to make connections between wires and is generally made up of metal strips configured in certain shapes. From various sizes, shapes, high and low power ratings, there are a huge variety of terminal blocks available in the market today.
Terminal blocks can be further divided into Din Rail and Channel categories. Din Rail terminal blocks are available in vertical and horizontal orientations and are for use with 35mm or 15mm Din Rail mountings. They are available in a variety of different styles such as twist, pluggable, sprung tension, clamp and USB tension. Din Rail terminal blocks are generally used in automotive, industrial, energy/power applications and instrumentation.
Channel terminal blocks are similar to Din Rail but can be used with most channel mountings. They are also available in a variety of different sizes, shapes and insulation types. Channel terminal blocks have snap-on terminals making them easier to install. They are mainly used in the automation, instrumentation and power distribution industries.
The main application field of terminal blocks is to provide a secure connection points for electric wires or other conductors. This is especially essential in cases where electricity needs to be directly connected without the use of soldering. The most popular type used for this purpose is the screw-type terminal blocks. This type makes it easy to move electrical signals by creating tight connections between electrical points with its built-in screw-clamping element.
An important factor to consider when looking at terminal blocks is working principle. Din Rail and Channel terminal blocks differentiate in their working principles with Din Rail working on the principal of spring and plate connection whereas Channel terminals work on clamp and plate technology. In both types, the conductor is held securely in the terminal block with the help of a screw which creates a tight connection and prevents loosening due to vibration or other factors.
In contrast to screw-type connection, newer terminal blocks use snap-type connection. This removes the need for screws completely and provides a faster and easier connection without the need for tools. Clamp-type terminal blocks are commonly used when a higher current is needed. This type creates a strong, reliable connection with springs that clamp down on the conductor.
No matter what type of terminal block is being used, the core principles remain the same. Terminal blocks provide a secure connection point for electrical signals which can be quickly connected and disconnected as needed. They also reduce the complexity of wiring as wires need not be soldered in order to connect them. With the development of new technologies, newer types of terminal blocks have been developed which offer even greater flexibility and convenience.
