Terminals - Ring Connectors
Ring connectors, commonly known as terminals or splices, are classic crimpable tools that can be used to provide an electrical connection from one component to another. They consist of a cylindrical metal conductor, surrounded by solid copper wire, with an insulating material separating the two. The conductor, most commonly copper, is connected to the other component by means of soldering. Connections are generally made in two different ways; either a crimped connection that uses a tool to compress the metal and create a permanent connection, or a soldered connection which creates a permanent mechanical bond.
The most popular type of terminal is the circular terminal, which is designed to enable connections between two components, usually of the same size. These terminals can provide a secure, reliable connection that is impervious to corrosion and environmental conditions. They are available in a number of sizes, including 1/4”, 3/8”, and ½”, with the 4 mm versions being widely used. Most ring terminals have a single or dual conductor, depending on the application. The dual conductor version provides additional connection options in areas with multiple components, such as in vehicle wiring.
The two-piece variety of terminals, often referred to as flat and straight terminals, is the most common type used in automotive applications. These terminals are designed to be slipped over the cable and crimped to provide a secure connection. In most cases, they will require a professional tool to make the connection. The two-piece also provides the user with the option of adding a strain relief to the connection, increasing the reliability and longevity of the connection.
The three-piece, or multi-ring terminal, is primarily used for larger cables, due to their ability to incorporate multiple conductors into a single connection. The three-piece is the ideal choice for applications that require a secure, reliable connection but also need to bridge multiple components without having to make multiple connections. This type of terminal is often used in automotive applications, where the cables connect through multiple alternators or other electrical devices.
Terminals are also used to form a variety of other connection types, such as those used to connect a ground wire, a negative polarity, or neutral connection. When connecting two wires of the same size, terminals are typically used as well. The most common type used in a variety of sizes is the ground terminal, which can be spliced to the junction created by the two wires. This terminal type also has a variety of other uses, such as connecting to light fixtures, lamps, and fans.
Finally, terminals are also used to create a variety of other special connections, such as those found in a distribution block. Some of these terminals have the ability to convert a single wire connection into a multiple conductor connection, allowing the user to easily add additional conductors to the installation. Distribution blocks are commonly used in automotive applications to provide a secure connection from the power source to the component. Each terminal type used in different applications has different advantages and disadvantages, depending on the installation needs.
Terminals can provide a variety of solutions to a wide variety of applications, with each terminal type having its own advantages and disadvantages. By carefully assessing the application and selecting the proper terminal type, a reliable, secure connection can be made. Whether it is a single connection, a multiple conductor connection, or a specialized connection, terminals have the versatility and strength to provide a solution.
