Ring connectors are widely used in the industry for their reliable performance in different electrical devices. As explained by Everett J. Buckenheimer, professor in the mechanical engineering faculty of the University of Wisconsin–Platteville, “ring connectors were first introduced in the early 1800s, when electrical current was used to operate various types of machines. At that time, direct current (DC) power sources were used; as a result, relays and other electrical switching device used in the industry were designed using the same principle of two opposite round surfaces, one positive and one negative, being connected together.
Ring connectors come in different sizes, shapes and materials. Although their general design is similar, since both are a round object that contains two opposing poles, the type of the ring connector itself depend on the environment and application field. Some of the most common type of ring connectors includes: the concentric ring connector, the threaded connector, and the `CFC` junction block connector.
Concentric Ring Connector
The concentric ring connector is composed of a single round body that contains two concentric rings located inside. The first one is an electrically conductive ring, the second one contains several pins located in separate compartments. Both rings are connected and the electricity passes from one to the other through an interconnection system.
The concentric type of connector is a reliable and versatile model, which is commonly used in applications such as automotive, medical, consumer and industrial electronic categories. It is highly used for heavy-duty applications in harsh environment, due to its waterproof characteristics, high-voltage capability, and its great flexibility in compressing and releasing with repeated use.
Threaded Connector
The threaded connector consists of a central body with two threaded ends. One end contains an electrically conductive pin, the other end contains a female thread. Inside the body of the connector, an interconnection system allows electricity to pass from the pin to a terminal, and from the terminal to another pin or thread. `CFC` Junction Block Connector
The `CFC` junction block connector is a partially open-style connector consisting of an electrically conductive metal sheet, that includes an inner hexagon or eight-pointed star shape. At one end of the sheet, there are two screw holes that are used to attach it to the device. The other end contains wire retainers and conductor slots. The wire retainers close the edges of the sheet, thereby providing a secure connection for the wires. This type of connector is widely used in applications, such as lighting and energy. Additionally, due to its great resistance against vibration, it has also been used in the aircraft industry.
Working Principle
In essence, the main function of a ring connector is to provide a rigid connection between two opposing surfaces. As stated beforehand, the connection is done by bringing two opposite round surfaces together, one with a positive pole and the other with a negative pole. The two surfaces are then secured by either screws, screws and nuts, clamps, or any other type of attachment. Once correctly attached, electricity is able to pass from one surface to the other through the interconnecting wires, generically known as conductors.
In addition to connecting two electrically conductive surfaces, ring connectors are also used as a point of attachment to mount a cable or component to a surface. As explained by the National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association (NEMA), “ring connectors are used to deliver power from the power source to the surface.
