When it comes to electricity, safety is one of the top priorities. To protect wiring systems, fuses are used. Fuses cut off undesired electrical circuits that induce fault currents, protecting the circuit from any further damage; the 3402.0048.11 belongs to this group of protective monitors.

The 3402.0048.11 (also referred to as "Type B") is a Type 2 dual-element, scheduled-reaction, time-delay fuse. It provides branch-circuit overload and short-circuit protection for power-transformer primary circuits from 4 amperes to 800 amperes. This makes them ideal for motor control circuits and similar power-transformer applications.

This particular fuse is composed of two independent cartridges: a primary and a secondary. The two elements are electrically connected in series, but physically in parallel within each fuse. The physical construction of the fuse is designed to allow the fuse to fit into separable switchgear assemblies.

The primary element of the fuse is calculated to blow more quickly than the secondary element, which is adjusted to a slower reaction time. This arrangement allows for an automatic overload protection, while simultaneously still affording the secondary element time to isolate a short circuit without the need to deenergize the circuit.

The 3402.0048.11 is also equipped with a patented latching mechanism that eliminates the need for resetting, even after short circuits. This is made possible due to the two cartridges having same disc length, which holds the fuse open during overload and short-circuit conditions.

When functioning normally, the 3402.0048.11 works similarly to many other fuses. If an over-current/short-circuit situation arises, it will act like a switch, cutting off the power from reaching the circuit by pushing out both cartridges, separating the contacts and tripping the switch.

To replace the fuse, the hi-side of the primary element is simply pulled out of the switchgear enclosure and the new 3402.0048.11 fuse is inserted into the switchgear and pushed into the enclosure. The primary and secondary elements of the fuse will snap into place, providing protection for the circuit once again.

The 3402.0048.11 fuse offers robust protection in several industrial applications. The dual-element arrangement allows for an automatic overload protection, while still providing the protection against short-circuits. The latching mechanism also eliminates the need for resetting the fuse, even after overload and short-circuit conditions.
