Fixed Inductors
Inductors are static electrical components used to store energy in a magnetic field. A fixed inductor typically consists of a single coil of copper wire wound around a core, usually made of ferrite, iron, or other magnetic materials.The inductance of a fixed inductor varies depending upon the number of turns on the coil and the core material used. The most common fixed inductors have inductance values ranging from 3.5mH to 150KH.
35mH - 150KH Application Field
Fixed inductors in the range of 35mH to 150KH are primarily used for AC (alternating current) applications. Lower value inductors are most commonly found in radio and televisions, including AM/FM receivers and AF systems. They are also often used in switch mode power supplies, including AC/DC converters, inverters and DC/DC converters. At higher values, fixed inductors are commonly used in inductive heating systems, variable speed drives, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and other industrial applications.
Working Principle of Fixd Inductors
Fixed inductors are generally designed to perform one of two functions: inductance or reactance. In both cases, inductors act as resistance to moving electrical current, causing electrons to lose energy as they pass through them and creating an opposing electrical field. Inductance is determined by the number of turns of wire in the coil, while reactance is determined by the core material.
In an AC-powered application, inductors are used to control the amount of current flowing through a circuit, either isolating it or providing a path for the current. This is most commonly accomplished by connecting the inductor in series with the load. In DC-powered applications, inductors are used to filter high frequency noise from the signal or to create a low pass filter. Low pass filters regulate the maximum frequency of a signal, while high pass filters regulate the minimum frequency. This works by allowing current to flow more readily at certain frequencies.
Inductors can also be connected in parallel with the load, often to create a filter for AC signals. The inductor\'s high impedance allows higher frequency signals to pass through more quickly, while lower frequency signals are slowed down and trapped, providing a filtering effect. This type of configuration is often found in switch mode power supplies, as it helps prevent rapid changes in output voltage when the load changes.
Finally, inductors can be used to store energy. This is common in some larger power supplies and in switched mode power supplies. In these applications, the inductor acts as a capacitor, charging with current when it encounters an AC signal. This stored energy can then be used to regulate the output current when the AC signal is removed, providing a more consistent output.
