Temperature Sensors - Thermostats - Mechanical: Temperature sensors, like thermometers, are devices that have become a vital part of modern life. The most important of these devices are mechanical thermostats. This type of sensor, when connected to an HVAC unit, will monitor the indoor air temperature and cycle the system when the temperature reaches a predetermined set point. A mechanical thermostat is composed of several components, each with its own unique role. At the center of the thermostat is a temperature sensing element, usually composed of a bimetallic strip. When the surrounding air temperature changes, the strip shifts shape accordingly, and a linkage between this element and the main mechanism responds to open or close the switch, like a switchblade. The switch normally comes connected to a dial or set point wheel known as the thermostat control knob. The knob is generally a rotary device which has markings for different temperature values, so the user can set the desired temperature they would like to maintain. This setting will trigger the switchblade to either open or close the circuit, depending on if the desired temperature is being met. The third component present in many thermostats is a control relay. This device confers electrical power upon the position of the switch, thus allowing additional mechanical or electrical devices to turn on/off depending on the switch position. For example, a furnace with a thermostat connected to a relay can cause the furnace to start when the air temperature falls below the setting of the knob, and switch off as the air temperature rises above the set point. A great variety of application fields for mechanical thermostats can be found, from industrial processes such as laboratories to residential heating and cooling systems. In industrial applications, the thermostat may be connected to a heavy duty relay to monitor high voltage. It is also frequently connected to heaters, fan coils, boilers, and electric motors, among many other types of facility infrastructure. In terms of residential use, thermostats are more commonly used for heating and cooling systems. They are connected to the furnace or air conditioner to provide comfort and energy efficiency. Smart thermostats have come into production in recent years which can be connected to the internet and controlled remotely from a computer or smartphone.Overall, mechanical thermostats’ application fields and working principle depend on the elements it contains. Moving forward, as technology and thermal controls progress, the role of the humble mechanical thermostat will become even more important in the age of smart and artificial intelligence households. The specific data is subject to PDF, and the above content is for reference
