Multiple conductor cables, especially with 3600G/50 100 application fields, are a type of cable commonly used in industrial applications. The cables are generally composed of a non-metallic sheathing and a number of conductors twisted around one another in an overall rugged configuration. The conductors are usually copper or aluminum alloy, but depending on the application, other metals such as stainless steel, bronze, and even wires made from special alloys may be used.
The 3600G/50 100 application field represents the cable size, or gauge, of the wire used in the construction of the cable. The larger the gauge, the higher the gauge number. Generally, larger gauges are used for higher current carrying applications or higher temperature applications. For instance, a 24 Gauge cable may be safely used for a relatively small load carrying application, such as running air conditioning equipment, while a 40 Gauge cable would be more appropriate for an industrial environment where high current and temperatures are present.
Multiple conductor cables are available in a wide variety of configurations and sizes. The most common configurations are 16/4, meaning 16 wires with 4 conductors in each intermediate conductor bundle; 24/4, meaning 24 wires with 4 conductors in each intermediate conductor bundle; and 36/8, meaning 36 wires with 8 conductors in each intermediate bundle. The intermediate conductor bundles are then housed together inside a jacketed sheath that provides both mechanical and electrical protection. Additionally, some cables may have a protective layer between the conductors and the sheathing to enhance the strength, flexibility and durability of the cable.
The working principle of the multiple conductor cables is relatively simple. Each conductor in the cable is corresponding to a specific terminal on the equipment being powered. When the equipment is activated, electricity is directed along one of the conductors to the equipment’s terminal. When electricity travels along the conductor, it causes the conductor to become electrically charged, resulting in the electricity being directed through the other available conductors in the cable.
This type of cable is suitable for applications where loads need to be separated, using multiple conductors, and for where flexibility is a priority. The cables can also be used in areas where physical damage is likely, such as marine and automotive applications.
Multiple conductor cables are generally relatively inexpensive compared to single-conductor cables and are widely available in different gauges, jacket configurations, and conductor configurations. Thus, they are a cost effective solution for a variety of applications.
