Introduction
FFC (Flat Flexible Connector) and FPC (Flat Flexible Circuit) connectors are flexible electronic interconnects consisting of multiple electric conductors, lined up in a flat formation in a plastic cylinder. The connection is made between electronic components by a series of pins connected in a common line. The plastic cylinder used to house the pins is known as the FFC "jacket".
39-51-3164 Application Field
FAF connectors have found wide application in industries such as home electronics, computer peripherals, automotive electronics , medical equipment and white goods such as air-conditioners, washing machines and dishwashers. FPC connectors are primarily used for interconnecting flexible flat cables to printed circuit boards and other electrical equipment. Due to their design, they are suitable for use in situations where space is limited and the cable or circuit needs flexibility.
Working Principle
FFCs and FPCs are designed to offer a secure connection between two components. The length of the connector and the number of pins varies depending on the desired usage and space restrictions. Generally, FFCs consist of a flat carrier with two or more contacts that can be soldered onto the two electronic components. The connector also contains a plastic housing that fits tightly over the contacts. The contacts are secured under pressure by two locking tabs.
In order to properly use an FFC connector, the connector must be properly aligned with the two components to be connected. This requires that the contacts are properly aligned using either a jig or by visual inspection. Once the contacts have been properly aligned, the connector and the two components can be joined together using a good quality solder.
FPC connectors, on the other hand, have wider application due to their flexibility. A typical FPC connector consists of a metalized contact made from polyester, nylon or other flexible material. The contact is then filled with a conductive material such as copper or tin. The contact is features a groove that allows it to be securely attached to a printed circuit board.
In order to use an FPC connector, an FPC contact must be inserted into the groove of the FPC connector. This is generally done with the help of a small, handheld device called a "jig." Once the contact is properly inserted into the connector, it is then secured with a small screw. The FPC connector is then ready to be connected to the desired electronic component.
Conclusion
FFC and FPC connectors are versatile electronic interconnects that offer reliable connections for a wide variety of applications. The principles of operation are fairly straightforward and, when implemented properly, can provide reliable connections between electronic components. They are particularly well-suited for use in small or tight spaces where flexibility is necessary.
