FFC (Flat Flexible) and FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) connectors are a type of interconnect technology that facilitates simple and reliable connection between two electrically conductive interfaces. The FPC and FFC have a common electrical connection referred to as the 39-51-3263 application field; however, the two differ in their physical characteristics.
FFC connectors consist of two conductive strips of flat flexible material, typically copper, connected at one end by a plastic clip and solder joint at the other end. This enables the connector to be bent and twisted, allowing for use in complex pathways and tight spaces. The FFC connector is found in applications such as office and consumer electronics, medical devices, automotive, and less demanding industrial environments.
FPC connectors are similar to FFC connectors in regards to their electrical connections, but differ in that they are more rigid due to their strong polyester substrate material and have greater insulation resistance. FPC connectors are resistant to vibration, thermal shock and they offer smaller sizes than their FFC counterparts. They are often used in applications involving high levels of electromagnetic interference, including industrial robots, medical equipment, laboratory instruments, and other sensitive electronic equipment.
The working principle of FFC and FPC connectors is based on a number of simple processes. First, a contact is placed between a flexible substrate and a contact between two corresponding surfaces of two or more conductive strips. Then, a spring clip is secured onto the strip to hold the connection in place. Depending on the application, the strip may be mounted on a clip, an immersion process, or a spot-type soldering process. Finally, the electrical connection between the two contact points is completed with a force fit, a friction fit, a solder joint, a press fit, or a mount. Once the connection is completed, a shield or a protective cover can be used to protect the connector from environmental and mechanical damage.
FFC & FPC connectors are highly reliable and offer a range of advantages, including high levels of flexibility, durability, and cost-effectiveness. They are also highly resistant to temperature, vibration, and shock, allowing them to withstand even the most vigorous of environments. Their small size also makes them an excellent choice for applications with limited space.
Whether used in consumer electronics, medical equipment, or industrial automation, FFC and FPC connectors offer reliable and versatile connections that are sure to accommodate the unique needs of any application.
