Rotary switches are used in applications in which the user needs a relatively large number of ON/OFF electrical circuit functions. A variety of rotary switches are available, but the 412-10 switch is especially popular due to its number of configured positions, carrying capacity and robust construction. A 412-10 switch can be configured in 10 positions, and it can carry a 3-amps load at 125 VAC and 2-amps at 250 VAC.
The 412-10 rotary switch is designed so that power is supplied to the load only when a particular switch "knife" is contacted, which allows users to assign a particular action to the corresponding switch position. For example, in a 10 position switch, one contacts might be used to turn on a sump pump, another contact might be used to control a light, and so on. To prevent accidental operation, the user is able to "lock out" any position that\'s not needed, or a knob cam might be used so that the knob cannot match up with an undesired switch configuration. The users are also able to etch a diagram on the surface of the rotary switch, showing the user which contacts correspond.
412-10 switches are available with either open or enclosed levers and various types of circuit construction, including single-pole, double-pole, three-way and four-way circuits. Open-lever switches offer easier installation over encapsulated-cam switches, and can also provide a better grip for adjusting a knob cam. These switches are also available with a choice of mounting styles, such as panel mount, bulkhead mount, face mount or through-panel mount.
The working principle of a 412-10 switch is relatively simple. When the switch is operated, a plate within the unit rotates around a shaft, connecting different contacts in the process. Positioning devices are used to maintain contact between the appropriate sets of contacts for each switch position. Every time the switch is operated, one position-key is disengaged and another is engaged at the same time, which results in power being supplied to the desired contacts. In most cases, provision is also made for intermediate positions, allowing the application of power to additional circuits.
These switches are used in many different applications, including industrial control panels, commercial and residential lighting systems, manual motor starters, circuit protection and signal applications. They can also be used to create custom-designed control panels, allowing integration of lighting control, HVAC controls and other automation applications.
In summary, the 412-10 rotary switch is an ideal choice for applications that require multiple electrical circuit functions, such as industrial and commercial facilities. This versatile switch is available in a variety of configurations, and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. With its robust construction and carrying capacity, the 412-10 switch is a reliable and cost-effective solution for many different industries.
