445A25D27M00000 application field and working principle
A Crystals, also known as a crystal oscillator, is a type of electronic oscillator, specifically a quartz oscillator, that produces a constant frequency that is used to keep track of time and to create an accurate voltage waveform. In its simplest form, a crystal oscillator can be constructed from two metalized, conductive plates facing each other, with a piezoelectric crystal mounted between them. The crystal, in turn, is connected to an external electrical circuit, and a quartz-crystal oscillator is formed.
Crystal oscillators are used in a wide range of applications, ranging from personal care devices to satellite communication systems. They are used for providing timekeeping functions in computers and other electronic devices, for setting and synchronizing oscillator frequencies in wireless communication systems, and for providing precision temperature control in medical devices. In addition, crystal oscillators are widely used in digital oscilloscopes, radio receivers, radar systems, and in other high precision, low noise electronic systems.
In order to understand how a crystal oscillator works, it is important to first understand the basics of quartz crystals and their electrical characteristics. Quartz crystals are composed of atoms that, when subjected to an electric current, vibrate in a very specific pattern, producing a particular frequency. Crystalline materials such as quartz, when subjected to an applied voltage, deplete or recharge depending on their electrical charge. This phenomenon is known as "piezoelectric effect". By passing an electrical current through a quartz crystal, the crystal can be charged or discharged, creating an electrical potential across the crystal.
In a crystal oscillator, the design usually consists of a small quartz crystal mounted in a metal holder that’s soldered onto a PCB (Printed Circuit Board). The metal holder allows the crystal to make a very precise connection to the PCB. This connection is electrically connected to a resonator circuit which is used to amplify the output signal from the crystal. As the crystal is charged and discharged, its frequency is determined by the number of electrons that flow through it, according to the quanta of energy in the electrons. As this frequency is constant, the output signal oscillates at a constant frequency.
The accuracy of a crystal oscillator is typically measured in parts per million (ppm) or mega Hertz (MHz). A typical crystal oscillator contains a package of several crystals that are arranged in a specific way to increase the output frequency and accuracy. A good quality crystal may offer an accuracy of around one ppm, while an extremely low jitter environment can yield accuracies as low as 0.05 ppm. The operating frequency of a crystal oscillator is limited by the amount of current that it can carry. Typically, frequencies up to several hundred MHz are achievable.
Thus, crystal oscillators are highly accurate, reliable pieces of electronics that are used to generate precise frequencies for a variety of applications.
