PLLs (Phase-Locked Loops) have been the mainstay not only of frequency synthesis, but also of clock signals since the 1970s. Phase locked loops continuously reconfigure a generator frequency based on an input signal, allowing the frequency to remain in lock with the input. PLLs also have variable output frequencies, allowing them to track frequency changes in the environment, or to modify the output frequency of the generator to match changing system demands.
More recently, Clock Generators and Frequency Synthesizers have emerged as alternate methods of frequency synthesis. Generators – unlike PLLs – use digital logic and DACs (Digital to Analog Converters) to deliver high-precision output without the need for PLLs. Frequency Synthesizers – unlike Generators – are typically used for larger syntheses of larger frequency ranges than what is available from a generator.
One example of a Generator/Synthesizer combination is the 501AMLF (Automatic MicroLock Frequency Synthesizer). The 501AMLF provides custom frequency synthesis solutions in the GHz range (1 – 9.95 GHz). This includes both generator and frequency synthesizer functions.
