Flat Flexible connectors, also known as FFC connector or FPC connector, are electronic devices used in many electrical and electronic equipment to establish connection between electrodes of two or more printed circuit boards. FFC connectors are commonly used in digital, audio-visual, computer, telecom, consumer, automotive and medical applications. They are widely used for purposes such as assembly, prototyping, testing, debugging, and product engineering.In terms of appearance, FFC connectors are small and flat and feature flexible, flat shields that can easily be removed for assembly and connection to printed circuit boards. Most FFC connectors are designed to be inserted into a cavity which holds the connector securely while allowing it to remain flat against the board surface, for improved stability and vibration resistance.The working principle of FFC or FPC connectors is based on an electrical contact or contactless connection of two electrical circuits. The electrical circuits use an array of contact blocks or contactless connection that has a number of built-in resistors and capacitors. The contact blocks or contactless connection create an electrical connection between the two electrical circuits when the closed contact blocks or contactless connection are touched together. When a contactless connection is used, the contact area between the two electrical circuits is much larger than with an array of contact blocks.Typically, FFC connectors are developed with a single piece of insulated flexible cable connected to a printed circuit board, eliminating the need for individual wiring. The cable is attached to the board through a connector such as a crimp type connector or a soldered type connector. The cables are usually soldered to the connectors, but in some cases, they may be screwed in as well.The contact surface of FFC or FPC connectors are usually made of gold plating, and the contact surfaces may be either male or female. The contacts may be either gold-plated, or plated with other materials such as aluminum or titanium. The contact area is usually designed to maintain impedance, resulting in highly efficient electrical connections.In order to ensure long-term reliability, FFC connectors are regularly tested against a range of environmental and mechanical conditions and are usually constructed out of materials that are resistant to environmental and chemical conditions. FPC connectors are also manufactured with robust insulation to ensure high electrical insulation performance and minimal electrical leakage.In conclusion, FFC or FPC connectors are widely used in many applications due to their compact design, excellent electrical and mechanical performance, and superior mechanical vibration resistance.
