The crystalline quartz crystal is cut along an axes which are not perpendicular to each other, normally giving rise to two axes, X and Y. The "X-axis" identifies the axes which is perpendicular to the plane of the electrodes or indents of the quartz crystal, while the "Y-axis" identifies the axes which is parallel to the plane of the electrodes or indents of the quartz crystal.X-axis oscillators are ideal for applications not requiring temperature compensation.
