FFC, FPC (Flat Flexible) ConnectorsFlat flexible connectors (FFC/FPC), as the name implies, offer a viable solution when a reliable electrical connection is needed in tight spaces. This advanced technology is a simple, yet extremely reliable way to make an electrical contact. The FFC/FPC technology addresses the requests from the ever-growing demands of modern applications. The benefits of using FFC/FPC flex connector technology are numerous and can be found across a variety of applications. The FFC/FPC flex connectors consist of one or several flat polymer conductor ribbons (typically polyimide) with a small number of contacts, normally gold plated, mounted on one or both sides. The contacts can be either solder terminals, solderless press fit technology or zero insertion force contacts. These contacts are configured in various patterns, depending on the application needs. The primary application of FFC/FPC flex connectors is in hand-held devices and owing is due to their light-weight, low profile and ease of use. The FFC/FPC flex connector technology replaces large bundles of multi-wire connectors in applications such as mobile phones, DVD players, PDAs, notebooks, digital cameras, and automated testing equipment. Additionally, the technology is also used in automotive, medical and military applications. The working principle of FFC/FPC flex connectors comes from the design of the contact construction. The contact itself is a type of Z-axis, pin-in-hole, type flex connector. When in its final position, the contact forms a friction lock with the Z-axis and ensures that it is held in the proper position. As the FFC/FPC flex connector is subjected to bending, the contact itself is designed to have some small amount of flex which allows it to move with the stamped part. Additionally, the contact is also designed to spring back in to its original position as the FFC/FPC flex connector is released. This ensures that there is no accidental contact loss due to repeated bending of the FFC/FPC flex connector. The FFC/FPC flex connector also has its own unique interlocking mechanism that helps it to stay in place and remain firmly connected. To facilitate proper connection, each contact must operate through a pair of axially-aligned pins that work in cooperation to hold the contact in the proper flat position. The first pin is an axial interlocking pin that slides along the Z-axis as the FFC/FPC flex connector is pressed into place. As the first pin passes the contact, the second pin wedges the connector into the contact and provides a tight mechanical locking. FFC/FPC flex connectors offer several advantages over traditional wire bundles. They are much easier to install and require fewer components than standard multi-wire cables. Additionally, they offer a more reliable connection and require less power than a comparable wire bundle; making them more energy-efficient. They also allow for increased portability with their light-weight design. Finally, the contacts provide a secure connection without the need for soldering or special thermal treatment. In conclusion, FFC/FPC flex connectors are the perfect solution to the many unique demands of modern applications. They offer a secure electrical connection in tight spaces and provide great flexibility in both design and function.
