Fixed inductors are passive devices consisting of a coil of wire wound around a core which serves to increase the inductance of the coil. The 55-392J is a fixed inductor developed by the American manufacturer Radio Corporation of America (RCA). It is a miniature variable-air gap non-reluctance power inductor with an adjustable air gap for improved power handling characteristics and improved linearity. Its design is based on the principle of an inductor; it consists of an iron core surrounded by a series of wire windings. When an electric current passes through the windings, it generates an electromagnetic field. This field then interacts with the metal cores, producing a magnetic field inside the inductor.
The 55-392J consists of two pieces of ferrite core, an adjustable air gap, and seven wire windings insulated with enamel. The adjustable air gap allows the designer to control the inductance and power handling characteristics of the product. The ferrite core material is designed to reduce the amount of eddy current losses while still providing an appropriate level of inductance. The dielectric strength of the insulation is rated at over 500 volts DC resistant in a temperature range of -40 to +125 degrees Celsius.
